More software sources, but are backported updates a good idea?

Immediately after installation the Update Manager prompted to downloaded 100+ MB of updates …did that.

> System > Administration > Software sources: enabled more software sources (universe, main, multiverse, restricted, source code), checked boxes to receive security, recommended and proposed updates. Still have to decide/research whether to also get backported updates.
I wonder if I can specify that only backported updates for certain applications are received but not for others? I may want to have some backported features in the future. However, I would not want Ubuntu to apply all available backports to all installed programs, as I guess that may compromise system stability. Or am I wrong??

Allowed Ubuntu to get anonymous software statistics so that hopefully the applications that I use most get maintained well.

…the new sources triggered more updates to be downloaded and installed …did that.
